How do you clean composite decking?

Sweep off leaves and grit, wash with warm water and a mild soap or detergent using a soft brush, then rinse. That’s the method Millboard, Envirobuild and Cladco describe, and it’s usually all you need. Clear the gaps between boards so water can drain. Makers that mention direction say to spray or scrub along the grain.

One UK owner who skipped the pressure washer, because her deck sat over a pond liner, used hot water, washing-up liquid, a soft brush and a mop to lift the dirty water as she went. It removed most of the green and black mould, though the boards weren’t spotless, and she plans to repeat it yearly rather than let it build up.

Can you pressure wash composite decking?

Many makers allow it, with limits, and the limits don’t match. Use a fan tip, keep the nozzle back and test a hidden spot first.

If you don’t want to use one at all, you don’t need to. The brush method above works.

Which decking cleaner should you use on composite?

Start with soap and water. The maker guides we read mostly don’t name a branded cleaner. Wickes says composite needs no specialist product, and Eurocell says not to use chemical products on its hollow boards. Eva-Last goes further for its Apex board: don’t use standard composite deck cleaners on it, and avoid strong detergents, oxidisers, concentrated mineral acids, solvents and undiluted chlorine.

If you do buy a decking cleaner, check three things on the label: that it says it’s safe for composite, that your maker doesn’t ban that type, and that you can rinse it fully. Test it on an offcut or a hidden corner. The widely sold decking cleaners are mostly made for timber. Ronseal’s decking cleaner, for example, is a timber product.

How do you remove mould and algae from composite decking?

Start with the soap and brush method. If black or green patches stay, Composite Prime suggests an organic patio cleaner such as Algon, or a sodium percarbonate oxygen bleach, then rinsing off all the detergent. Trex says to remove pollen and debris and scrub with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Cladco’s Signature guide says apply soapy water or Cladco cleaner, scrub, leave it for 60 minutes and rinse.

Mould feeds on dirt, so the real fix is keeping the deck clear. Shady corners and spots under pots stay damp the longest.

How do you remove stains from composite decking?

StainWhat makers say
Spills (wine, ketchup, food)Wipe quickly. Trex asks you to clean spills within seven days to keep its stain warranty.
Berries and animal droppingsMillboard says remove them quickly with water and mild detergent.
Oil and greaseComposite Prime suggests a household degreaser.
Rust and ground-in dirtComposite Prime suggests an oxalic or phosphoric acid cleaner left 10 to 15 minutes; Eva-Last suggests a bristled brush; Trex warns acids can lighten the surface.
Light scratchesSand gently along the grain on uncapped boards only (Envirobuild). Don’t sand capped boards (Envirobuild, Eva-Last).
Barbecue burn marksEcoscape says superficial marks can be sanded lengthways with 80 grit. Millboard says put braziers on a porcelain or cement slab extending about 1 m beyond.

Test every product on a hidden patch first, as several of these makers say.

What should you do in winter?

Use a plastic shovel, not a metal one, on snow and ice. De-icers are where makers disagree:

  • Millboard says a small amount of granulated white salt is fine, and rock salt isn’t because it contains clay and grit.
  • Composite Prime and Trex say calcium chloride or rock salt will do.
  • Envirobuild says avoid calcium chloride because it can leave marks.
  • Eva-Last says calcium or sodium chloride may be used, which can leave white residue, and that grip is reduced when the deck is icy.

You’ll have to choose one maker’s advice, so choose yours.

Why does new decking look oily, and does the colour change?

New Millboard can look oily or shiny from a manufacturing release agent that weathers off in 6 to 8 weeks. Guardian says initial lightening evens out over 8 to 10 weeks. Composite Prime says colour pigments stabilise in the first 6 to 12 months. A US decking retailer suggests keeping a spare offcut indoors, so you can see how much the deck has shifted after years.

How do you look after composite decking day to day?

Furniture and planters need rubber or felt feet, and dragging things scratches the surface. Millboard warns about unprotected furniture legs, spiked shoes, animal claws and metal planter bases. Move furniture now and then so the boards weather evenly, as Eva-Last advises. Eurocell says no single item over 100 kg and no dragging furniture across hollow boards.

How do you clean timber decking?

Different rules apply. See timber decking for bleach, washing powder and pressure-washer settings that only suit wood.

How do you clean wooden decking without a pressure washer?

Cuprinol’s cleaner says to scrape or brush off heavy growth with a stiff brush suited to grooved boards, apply by brush only, scrub the affected area, leave it for a few minutes, rinse with water and leave to dry for at least an hour before removing the dead growth. Ronseal’s cleaner is poured on and scrubbed immediately, left 15 to 20 minutes, then washed off with a pressure washer or hose. Ronseal’s decking guide gives 15 minutes, and its stripper needs about 30 minutes.

Wickes suggests hosing the deck, then scrubbing along the grain and between boards with household bleach (oxygen bleach preferred) mixed with water at 1 to 5, or white vinegar and water where pets or plants are near, leaving about 20 minutes and rinsing. The bleach ratio is a retailer’s advice, and Cuprinol and Ronseal give no pressure settings. Howarth Timber warns that high pressure settings can damage the wood, and Wickes says to use the lowest setting with even pressure. A full clean is only really needed about twice a year, in spring and autumn.

Composite is different: Ecoscape recommends cleaning once or twice a year with a jet wash on a fan beam held at least 20 cm away and moved lengthways, or a brush with all-purpose cleaner. Compare the maker’s advice for your board above.

Questions

What is the best cleaner for composite decking?

Warm water, a mild soap or detergent and a soft brush is what Millboard, Envirobuild, Trex and Cladco all describe. Wickes says composite needs no specialist cleaner. Where a maker names a product, it is for stains: Composite Prime names Algon or a sodium percarbonate bleach for mould and mildew.

Can I use bleach on composite decking?

Most makers say no. Envirobuild and Cladco advise against bleach, Wickes says avoid it, and Trex says bleach or acid products will lighten the surface. Composite Prime is the exception, suggesting an oxygen bleach for mould, which is why you should check your own maker.

How often should I clean composite decking?

Twice a year is Wickes' advice. Ecoscape says once or twice a year. Eva-Last suggests monthly pressure washing for its Apex board but with extreme caution. Year one often needs very little: one UK owner's boards looked fine after twelve months.

Why is my new composite decking oily or shiny?

New Millboard can look oily because of a manufacturing release agent, which weathers off in 6 to 8 weeks. Guardian says its sanded or lightened areas take 8 to 10 weeks to weather in.

How do I get rust marks off composite decking?

Composite Prime suggests a cleaner with an oxalic or phosphoric acid base, left 10 to 15 minutes. Eva-Last suggests a bristled brush. Trex warns acid products can lighten the surface, so try a small hidden area first.

How do I remove oil or grease from composite decking?

Composite Prime suggests a household degreaser. Millboard says remove spills quickly with water and mild detergent and that no solvents are needed. Clean fresh spills first and test any product on an offcut.

Can I sand composite decking to remove scratches?

Only if it is uncapped. Envirobuild says gently sand light scratches along the grain on its uncapped Explorer board but not on capped Frontier. Eva-Last says don't sand capped boards and warns that sanding can void a claim. Ecoscape suggests sanding surface barbecue burns lengthways with coarse paper.

How do you clean wooden decking?

Sweep, brush off moss and algae, apply a decking cleaner and scrub it in, leave it 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse. Ronseal and Wickes both use that sequence.

How do you clean wooden decking without a pressure washer?

Use a stiff brush and hose. Cuprinol's decking cleaner is applied by brush only, scrubbed in, left a few minutes and rinsed, then left to dry for at least an hour before you remove the dead growth.

How do you clean decking without a pressure washer?

Hose it, scrub along the grain and between boards with a stiff brush and cleaner, leave about 20 minutes and rinse. Wickes suggests white vinegar and water where pets or plants are close.
