Composite decking clips

Clips are matched to the board groove, so use the system your maker names. Eva-Last gives 20 to 25 hidden fasteners per m2, Millboard uses screws not clips, and gaps run from 3 to 6 mm.

Which clip does each board take?

Clips are specific to the board groove, so buy the system your maker names. What we found:

Ecoscape’s warranty is valid only if you register within 90 days and install with its recommended fixings and guide: 25 years on Timbex, Forma and Grande, 15 on Linea and 20 residential on Clarity. We couldn’t open Ecoscape’s install guide, so its clip spacing isn’t listed here.

What gap do clips leave?

eDecks says its stainless clips give a 3 to 5 mm gap and tells you to leave 5 mm against any solid structure. TrulyPVC gives 3 to 7 mm at sides and ends, with 10 mm from a wall. Deckorum sells a 6 mm T-clip and a 3 mm option and says to leave 15 mm to buildings for the frame. Envirobuild says its 3 mm fasteners are stainless steel and its 6 mm ones are recycled nylon. Retailers differ, so use the gap your board maker states.

Where does each clip go?

Starter clips hold the first and last board, and intermediate clips go on every joist in between. eDecks sets starter and intermediate clips at 300 mm intervals, matching its joists, and secures the last board with a screw at 45 degrees. TrulyPVC puts both at every joist, with a maximum of 350 mm centres. Deckorum quotes 250 mm for both, which is closer than the other sources. The spacing follows the joists, so work from your maker’s joist centres; see joists.

How many do you need?

Count one clip at every joist each board crosses. Per square metre, the maker figures above are 20 to 25. For a 10 m² deck, Deckorum’s retailer arithmetic gives 40 starter clips and 240 T-clips. Envirobuild suggests one box of 100 starter fasteners for each 25 m². Buy a few extra, because grooved boards cut at the ends use starter clips too.

MKM lists Ecoscape’s 250 pack at an account price, so we can’t quote it. Prices were read on 30 October 2026 and change.

What about stainless or plastic?

Stainless clips are the norm for the starter row. TrulyPVC describes its hidden T-clip as plastic with a painted stainless screw, and Envirobuild’s 6 mm fastener as recycled nylon. If you’re near the coast or a pool, ask your board maker which clip material its warranty allows.

Questions

What are composite decking clips?

Small fasteners that grip the groove in the side of a board and screw down into the joist, so no screw shows on the surface. Each board is held at every joist it crosses.

What are decking spacers?

Spacers set the gap between boards. With hidden clips the clip sets the gap for you: 3 to 5 mm on eDecks' stainless clips, and 3 or 6 mm on other retailers' clips. If your board is face-screwed, use a spacer of the gap your maker states.

Do all composite boards use clips?

No. Millboard fixes its boards with Durafix lost-head screws, and Eva-Last's square-edge Infinity board takes top-fix screws at 48 per m². Clips need a grooved board.

How many clips do I need per square metre?

Eva-Last's UK brochure gives 20 hidden fasteners per m² for its I-Series on joists up to 500 mm, and 25 per m² for Infinity HD at 300 mm. A retailer, Deckorum, says 24 T-clips and 4 starter clips per m². Use your maker's figure.
